The Future of The Devil and his Angels
Chapter 9
HELL / AFTERLIFE
Jude 1:5-7
Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day, 7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.
2 Peter 2:4-10
For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment; 5 and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter; 7 and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men 8 (for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), 9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment, 10 and especially those who indulge the flesh in its corrupt desires and despise authority.
Sodom and Gomorrah are provided here as examples of the fate of the devil, his angels, and the ungodly. The punishment of these cities in their destruction (which already happened) are directly correlated to the punishment of eternal fire. These cities were destroyed by fire and those who follow in their footsteps will suffer their same fate of destruction by fire. Sodom and Gomorrah “are exhibited as an example” for any of those who would follow their same path. 2 Peter 2 provides a few examples of the fate of the wicked. Sodom and Gomorrah are examples as well as the flood. Those who suffered their fate were destroyed from the world and are not still suffering in this world to this day. Therefore, the punishment is likened here to annihilation and the reference to this final destruction is the final judgement where each one will give an account for their deeds and be finally judged by God.
Currently, many of the devil’s angels are in “hell” (tartaroō). That is, Tartarus, which in Greek thought is the deeper region of the netherworld, Hades. From these passages, it is described as “pits of darkness” and “eternal bonds under darkness.” That is, they are in a dark holding place, jailed up until they await their final sentence from God at the final day of judgement. Verse 7 says, “just as” Sodom and Gomorrah… This “just as” is meant to be a comparative statement between Sodom and Gomorrah with the punishment of eternal fire which is stated in the present continuous tense, “are exhibited,” and “in undergoing the punishment.” This does not mean to communicate here that they are presently still suffering but rather, their example of suffering is what is in the continuous present tense. And it is this example that will befall every ungodly person and evil angel—destruction.
Regarding the future of the devil, Ezekiel 28:18-19 prophecies
By the multitude of your iniquities,
In the unrighteousness of your trade
You profaned your sanctuaries.
Therefore I have brought fire from the midst of you;
It has consumed you,
And I have turned you to ashes on the earth
In the eyes of all who see you.
All who know you among the peoples
Are appalled at you;
You have become terrified
And you will cease to be forever.
